How can we get involved?

There are four ways that you and your workplace can involved with and support the #HeyAreYouOK? campaign.  Our aim is to be able to deliver the student #HeyAreYouOK campaign to local schools, free of charge!!  So, throw your support behind us and become a sponsor, endorser, champion or ambassador!!

By becoming a sponsor you will receive a pack of materials and merchandise with the #HeyAreYouOK? message.

You will also be contributing to the team delivering a free student workshop to local students.

The team will provide a two hour workshop for your team to help them implement the message into their lives and work practices.  By doing this you will be endorsing the #HeyAreYouOK? Campaign in your workplace.

You will also be helping us to deliver free student workshops to local schools.

We will provide further training for key staff (HR staff, managers with health and well being responsibility) to help embed the #HeyAreYouOK? message into the workplace culture.  By doing this you will be championing the principals of the #HeyAreYouOK? campaign in your workplace.

You will also be helping us to deliver free student workshops to local schools.

We can provide more detailed skills training for key staff (HR staff, managers with health and wellbeing responsibility and Occupational Health staff) in the suicide prevention, self-harm mitigation and suicide postvention to help support and signpost staff needing more specialist help.  By doing this you will become an ambassador of mental health and wellbeing in your workplace.

You will also be helping us to deliver free student workshops to local schools.

Workplace workshops

STORM® believes that the responsibility for mental health and wellbeing needs to be mutually inclusive between the workplace and the workforce. Through a short workshop, staff members explore the 3-steps approach in detail to:

  • Raise awareness and understanding of stress and distress - (di)stress
  • Understand the relationship between emotional, physical and mental health
  • Know when the signs of (di)stress and what to do to help themselves and to reach out to others
  • Promote adoption into their personal and work life.

In a follow on workshop, key staff members learn how to embed the 3-steps approach into systems, practices and procedures.

With STORM® Skills Training and the #HeyAreYouOK workshops, the workplace not only has a workforce with the relevant skills to help look after their own mental wellbeing, and to reach out to someone in (di)stress, but also the opportunity to develop a culture that more effectively manages and responds to (di)stress.

A story from a #HeyAreYouOK? workplace

Four Easy Words - published 7th March, 2017

‘Hey, are you OK?’ Four easy words at the core of a campaign aimed at the heart of communities, workplaces and schools. The #HeyAreYouOK? Social Change Campaign, aiming to improve attitudes and culture in response to stress and distress, comes from the team at STORM® Skills Training, a not-for-profit social business.  The STORM team visited Global Support Services (GSS) to deliver their simple and effective three step approach.

The two-hour workshop, delivered by Dr. Gill Green at the GSS headquarters, provided a great opportunity for the team to learn about and reflect on the three steps of the #HeyAreYouOK? campaign: 1. Look after yourself.  2. Look out for each other. 3. If you feel able, offer help and support.

Daniel Mailly, GSS Managing Director, reported the workshop was very well received, Gill was incredibly knowledgeable and able to deliver her knowledge in a seamless way.  All staff were fully engaged and opened-up in a way I’d not seen before. The three stages of the campaign were simple to understand and follow. The workshop allowed me to consider my own state of mind as a starting point, which was a powerful message.”

The #HeyAreYouOK? campaign is about challenging the fear of talking openly and honestly about how stressed or distressed we feel.  To change the culture of silence, we first need to open the conversation, which is exactly what was achieved on the day, reports GSS Risk Director, Leigh Gillon. “The workshop involved an extremely useful discussion about everyday problems that everyday people face. From my point of view, people live their lives inside two bubbles, their private lives and their public lives. For me, the aim of the campaign isn’t to interfere into your co-workers’ personal lives but to help recognise the signs that can make you aware that they may need support, advice, or just a friendly chat. The workshop made me realise that because the world is so fast paced, every now and then we need to stop, take some air and be conscious of how those around us in our workplace are feeling...”

The campaign stems from STORM’s long history of work around suicide prevention.  The team wanted to have an earlier impact, before suicide becomes an option. They developed the #HeyAreYouOk? campaign to help change attitudes to stress and distress, which if left unacknowledged can lead to thoughts of suicide.

In these times, we are becoming increasingly aware of the economic and personal impact stress has; we also know that the highest rates of suicide are seen in males aged 45-49 and most men of this age are in the workplace.   It’s very powerful to think that four simple words, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ can have such an impact.
